Wellness Through Music, Movement, and Community

Hi, I’m Tara O. Dye. For years I worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providing clinical therapy. Through that experience I learned the irreplaceable value of community to build social support, the healing effect of movement on our minds and bodies, as well as the power of music when we don’t have the words to express ourselves.
Music and movement have been a part of humanity and community since prehistoric times. In many cultures, music and dance have been the cornerstones of ceremony and rites of passage. Today, mainstream culture considers these activities as more extracurricular rather than a foundational pathway to healing and community. In this age of technology and productivity, many of us have also become more socially isolated than ever, which is a risk factor for poor mental health.
Science confirms the benefits of this ancient knowledge through research. When people experience trauma, the emotions can stay stuck in the body creating nervous system dysfunction that negatively impacts wellbeing. Studies have measured less stress markers in the body after rhythmic movement, that allows for the release of stuck emotions. Research has also observed when listening to music and certain frequencies, different brainwave states are activated that can promote emotional processing and faster physical healing.
This is where I, in my former work as a LPC, became interested in learning more about sound therapy. Eventually, I branched off from clinical work and I began to offer holistic wellness services. This includes sound healing and life coaching sessions that I call soul support. My approach asks clients to build their worldview and belief system from a higher perspective- whether that is religion, spirituality, or connection to something bigger than the self such as nature, passions, or community. The benefit of this approach lies in creating a foundational sense of safety and connection, while engaging in practices to process negative emotions for healing.

It is a joy to see how the Sin Pausa Foundation embodies these truths- creating a space for music, movement, and community to come together. There is a greater force at work when these values are held in a safe space and allowed to flourish. Our ancestors knew the power it holds for healing and wellbeing. May we follow in their footsteps and continue these sacred practices by supporting opportunities such as this one in Houston.
Be well.
